_The route runs west from Atlanta across the Appalachians and central plains before entering the high desert and continuing to Southern California._

The most distinctive sight on this westbound route comes late in the journey: Barringer Crater, a large, nearly circular depression in northern Arizona that lies very close to the flight path. Before reaching it, the view changes steadily from Atlanta’s green, rolling landscape to plains, high desert and the rugged terrain of the Southwest.

## Forested ridges rise beyond Atlanta

After departure, Atlanta may appear below as a broad, tree-covered city with a denser downtown core. The route quickly enters the Appalachian Mountains, where rounded ridges, forested slopes and long valleys replace the flatter urban landscape around the airport.

_Soon after leaving Atlanta, the route crosses the rounded, forested ridges of the Appalachian Mountains._
Across Tennessee, the aircraft continues over hills and river valleys. Nashville lies very close to the route and may be visible in clear conditions as a large built-up area following the Cumberland River. The Cumberland Plateau then adds more rugged, elevated ground before the landscape begins to flatten farther west.

## The Ozarks break up the central lowlands

The route next reaches the Central Lowlands, a broad plain covering a large part of the interior. Within this wider lowland region, the Ozarks stand out as a more uneven area of rolling hills, forests and river-cut terrain.

_The route passes from central lowlands into the rolling, wooded uplands of the Ozarks._
The track briefly crosses Missouri and then continues through Arkansas. From cruising altitude, the change is less about one sharp boundary and more about the gradual shift from wooded uplands toward more open country.

## Open country across Oklahoma and Texas

By Oklahoma, the view becomes broader and flatter. Tulsa lies almost directly beneath the route and can sometimes be picked out along the Arkansas River, with its urban core surrounded by lower-density development and green space.

The Great Plains then become the dominant landscape. Their flat to gently rolling surface stretches across much of this part of the flight, continuing into Texas.

_Across Oklahoma and Texas, the landscape opens into the broad, flatter terrain of the Great Plains._
Amarillo sits almost directly on the route and may stand out as a compact city surrounded by wide fields and open high plains. West of the city, the aircraft crosses the Llano Estacado, a high plain with long, level stretches of land.

## High desert builds toward Arizona’s crater

New Mexico marks a strong visual change. The landscape becomes drier and more broken, with plateaus, mountains and broad basins replacing the greener plains farther east. The route then reaches the Colorado Plateau, a high desert region shaped by mesas, canyons and wide open spaces.

In northeastern Arizona, Petrified Forest National Park lies near the route. Its unusual stone-coloured terrain may be visible in clear conditions, though it is farther from the flight path than some of the sights that follow.

Barringer Crater is the standout landmark. The route passes very close to this nearly circular depression, which is about 1,200 metres wide. From the air, its regular shape can make it easier to distinguish from the surrounding Arizona terrain than many natural features.

_Arizona brings some of the route’s clearest landmarks, including desert plateaus and Barringer Crater close to the flight path._
Not long afterward, Sedona lies close to the track. Its red rock formations can create a strong colour contrast with the surrounding desert. Flymap can help match these Arizona landmarks to the aircraft’s position when several ridges, mesas and dry basins are visible at once.

## From the Mogollon Rim to the Sonoran Desert

The route then crosses the Mogollon Rim, a long rise in elevation where forested highlands overlook lower desert country. This creates another noticeable shift in texture before the aircraft continues over the Sonoran Desert.

Lake Havasu lies close to the route farther west and may appear as a long blue shape cutting through dry, rugged land. The track also touches the Great Basin, a broad western region of separate valleys and mountain ranges, before entering California.

## Southern California mountains before Los Angeles

The final part of the flight crosses California’s inland mountains and valleys. San Gorgonio Mountain lies close to the track and may be visible as a prominent high peak among the surrounding ranges.

_The final stretch crosses Southern California mountains and inland terrain before the descent toward Los Angeles._
As the aircraft continues toward Los Angeles, the rugged inland terrain gives way to the much denser built landscape around the destination. The shift from desert and mountain country to the Los Angeles urban area provides a clear final contrast before landing.
