_A westbound route across the United States, from wooded eastern highlands to California’s mountain ranges._

This westbound crossing lets the ground unfold in clear stages: wooded ridges near Atlanta, wide central plains, the abrupt wall of the Rockies, dry western basins, and finally California’s Sierra Nevada. Cloud, haze, and the side of the aircraft will affect what you see, but Flymap can help you match these changing landscapes to the ground below.

## Forested ridges after Atlanta

Soon after departure from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta may be visible through its dense tree cover, with the downtown skyline standing above the surrounding streets. The route then enters Georgia’s rolling uplands and the Appalachian Mountains.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of this ancient mountain system. From cruising altitude, look for long, softened ridges, forested slopes, and broad valleys rather than sharp alpine peaks. The track briefly crosses North Carolina before continuing through Tennessee and Kentucky.

_The route reaches the forested Appalachian highlands soon after leaving Atlanta._
As the terrain becomes a mix of hills, valleys, and the raised Cumberland Plateau, Mammoth Cave National Park may be possible to pick out as a broad green area. The cave system itself is underground, so it is not a window view; its parkland is the visible clue.

## Lowlands, rivers, and the Ozark uplands

West of the Cumberland Plateau, the landscape opens into the Central Lowlands and Illinois. This is a broad, flatter part of the route, where large river valleys and cultivated land can make a more regular patchwork below.

The ground becomes more broken again over Missouri and the Ozarks, a highland region of wooded hills and winding river valleys. In clear conditions, Lake of the Ozarks may stand out from above: its reservoir shoreline has many narrow arms and coves.

_The Ozarks bring rolling, wooded uplands to the middle part of the crossing._
## A long run across Kansas

The route continues over Kansas and into the Great Plains. Here the changes are less dramatic at first, but the scale is striking. Flat to gently rolling land extends toward the horizon, divided into large fields and crossed by thin lines of roads and streams.

This is the calm middle stretch before the western mountains. As the aircraft approaches Colorado, the high plains rise gradually, then the shape of the horizon changes quickly.

_The broad Great Plains form the long approach to the Rocky Mountains._
## The sudden rise of the Rockies

Colorado brings the most immediate terrain change of the journey. The Front Range is the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, where high ridges rise sharply from the plains. Depending on cloud and visibility, the mountains can appear as a broad, rugged belt rather than a single line of peaks.

Beyond the Front Range, the route remains over the Rockies before reaching the Colorado Plateau. A plateau is elevated land with a relatively broad top; here, it is cut by deep valleys and canyons. The scenery shifts from mountain ridges to dry, layered terrain.

## Red rock country and the basin ranges

Across Utah, the Colorado Plateau offers high desert country shaped by erosion. Arches National Park may be near the route, although individual stone arches are unlikely to be clear from an airliner. What may be easier to notice is the rugged red-rock terrain around it, especially in strong sun.

_Utah’s high desert terrain follows the Rocky Mountain crossing._
Farther west, the Great Basin spreads across Nevada. This is a region of enclosed valleys and separated mountain ranges, where water generally does not drain to the ocean. From above, the repeated pattern of pale basins and darker ridges can be more obvious than individual landmarks.

## Sierra crossing and the Bay Area approach

After entering California, the aircraft reaches the Sierra Nevada, the final major mountain spine on this route. Mono Lake may be visible beside the dry eastern side of the range, appearing as a broad enclosed lake against rugged terrain. The Sierra itself can show long high ridges, deep valleys, and, in clear conditions, a notably jagged profile.

_The Sierra Nevada is the final major mountain barrier before the Bay Area._
The land then drops into the Central Valley, a flatter and more fertile corridor between mountain systems. The Pacific Coast Ranges follow before the descent toward San Francisco International Airport. Near the end, San Francisco Bay may come into view; Alcatraz Island can sometimes be picked out as a small, distinct island in the bay.

## Route summary

- Departure begins above Atlanta’s tree-covered urban landscape and quickly reaches the Appalachian highlands.
- Kentucky, the Central Lowlands, the Ozarks, Kansas, and the Great Plains provide the long central transition westward.
- The Rocky Mountains and Front Range mark the route’s sharpest rise in terrain.
- Utah’s Colorado Plateau and Nevada’s Great Basin bring dry plateaus, basins, and parallel mountain ranges.
- California closes the journey with the Sierra Nevada, Central Valley, coastal ranges, and the approach to San Francisco Bay.
