This flight begins beside broad freshwater and green lowlands, then ends in a landscape of dry basins, red plateaus, and desert mountains. The change is gradual at first, but by the time the aircraft reaches Colorado and the Southwest, the view below can look completely different from the Great Lakes country around Buffalo. 

## Great Lakes water appears almost immediately

The route leaves Buffalo through a very short section of New York, the Allegheny Plateau, and the Appalachian Mountains before reaching Lake Erie. Niagara Falls lies near the opening part of the route and may be visible in clear conditions, though the exact view depends on the aircraft’s side and visibility.

Lake Erie is the first large geographic feature that can dominate the window. Its broad surface forms a strong contrast with the surrounding land and marks the U.S.-Canada border through this part of the route.

The aircraft then crosses the Central Lowlands and Ontario. Lake Saint Clair follows later, and the Detroit River may be especially easy to recognize as a narrow waterway between built-up areas. Detroit itself lies very close to the route and can sometimes be picked out along the river.

## Water gives way to the interior lowlands

After Michigan, the scenery shifts toward the flatter interior landscapes of Indiana and Illinois. Fields, roads, rivers, and towns create repeating patterns across broad plains rather than sharp relief.

Missouri continues the transition with a mix of plains, forests, and major river valleys. By Kansas, the route is fully into wide-open country, where long horizons and large agricultural patterns often become the main visual features.

## The Great Plains stretch toward Colorado

The Great Plains form a long, open section before the western mountains. From above, the terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, and the sense of scale can be more striking than any single landmark.

As Colorado approaches, the plains begin to rise. That change can be subtle at first, but it leads directly into the strongest terrain shift of the flight.

## The Rockies break the long flat horizon

The Rocky Mountains replace the broad plains with rugged ridges and valleys. Crestone Peak lies almost directly along the route and, in clear conditions, may stand out among the Sangre de Cristo range.

Through Utah and Arizona, several major landmarks lie near the route. Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park may be visible in clear conditions, with isolated red-sandstone buttes rising above the plateau. Lake Powell can sometimes stand out even more clearly because its bright blue water winds through canyon country. Zion National Park lies farther along, where rugged red-sandstone relief continues toward southwestern Utah.

## Nevada closes the journey with dry basins

The final section enters Nevada, where arid valleys and mountain ranges alternate across the landscape. The route also reaches the Great Basin, an immense region of internally drained valleys and isolated ridges.

Las Vegas appears near the end as a dense built-up area surrounded by dry terrain. Its urban grid and long developed strip form a sharp final contrast with Buffalo’s Great Lakes setting at the start of the flight.
