_The route begins over broad Midwestern plains and finishes amid the dry desert and mountain landscapes of the Southwest and Southern California._

This flight is defined by a long change in texture: Chicago’s broad, green lowlands and agricultural plains gradually give way to the drier, higher, and more rugged landscapes of the Southwest. The clearest contrast arrives late in the journey, when the Great Plains are far behind and the Sonoran Desert, desert cities, and Southern California mountains fill the window.

## Flat fields and river bends west of Chicago

The route begins over Illinois and the Central Lowlands, where the view is mostly flat to gently rolling. Fields, roads, and river valleys create the main patterns rather than major changes in elevation.

The Illinois River may be visible soon after departure as a winding, green-bordered line across the surrounding countryside. Farther southwest, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site lies near the route; in clear conditions, its green parkland and prominent earthen mounds may be picked out near the Mississippi River.

## The plains stretch across Missouri and Kansas

Across Missouri and Kansas, the aircraft remains over broad interior country. The landscape mixes plains, river valleys, fields, and patches of woodland, but the overall impression is still open and low.

The Great Plains then become the dominant geographic feature. From cruising altitude, the change is less about a single landmark and more about scale: long horizons, large field patterns, and relatively little sharp relief.

_The Great Plains extend the route’s long opening stretch of flat to gently rolling country._
Oklahoma and the short Texas section continue this plains landscape before the route reaches New Mexico.

## New Mexico breaks the flat horizon

New Mexico marks the first major change from the long plains crossing. The terrain becomes higher, drier, and more broken, with basins, plateaus, and mountain areas replacing the flatter country farther east.

Cochiti Lake may be visible close to the route as a blue reservoir among brown and green hills. The flight then crosses part of the Rocky Mountains, bringing a short but clear return to rugged peaks and valleys.

_The Rocky Mountains interrupt the long plains crossing with a short but clear rise into rugged western terrain._
## High desert takes over on the Colorado Plateau

Beyond the Rockies, the route crosses the Colorado Plateau, a high desert region shaped by mesas, canyons, and broad exposed surfaces. This is where the color and structure of the landscape can change noticeably from the greener central states.

In Arizona, Petrified Forest National Park lies near the route. From the air, the broader mineral-rich terrain may be easier to notice than individual fossilized logs. Farther west, the Mogollon Rim forms a strong edge between higher forested land and lower desert country.

## The Sonoran Desert becomes the main view

The Sonoran Desert creates the strongest contrast with the beginning of the flight. Dry basins, rocky hills, sparse vegetation, and wide open ground replace the fields and river country seen after departure.

Phoenix may sometimes be visible as a huge street grid spread across the desert floor and framed by rugged mountains. Flymap can help match that urban pattern, nearby mountain shapes, and the changing desert terrain to the aircraft’s position.

## California brings desert lakes and steep mountains

The final section crosses into California, but the dry landscape continues at first. The Salton Sea may be visible in clear conditions as a broad body of water set sharply against the surrounding desert.

Closer to the route, Palm Springs can sometimes be picked out beside the desert mountains. San Jacinto Peak is an especially strong possible landmark, rising steeply above the surrounding lowlands before the flight continues toward Santa Ana.

_The California segment carries the route past desert basins and steep mountains before the arrival in Orange County._
This final mountain-and-desert scenery makes the arrival feel very different from the departure: the flight starts over broad Midwestern plains and ends after crossing some of the driest and most rugged terrain on the route.

## Route summary

- Illinois and the Central Lowlands begin the flight with flat fields and broad river valleys.
- Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and a short Texas crossing keep the route over the Great Plains.
- New Mexico introduces higher desert terrain and a Rocky Mountain crossing.
- The Colorado Plateau and Sonoran Desert create the strongest visual change of the flight.
- California adds the Salton Sea, Palm Springs, and the steep San Jacinto Mountains before Santa Ana.
