_The Fort Myers to Detroit route starts over flat Florida and coastal landscapes before crossing the long forested ridges of the Appalachian Mountains._

The major visual change on this flight comes in the second half, when the flat landscapes of Florida and the Atlantic coast give way to the long green ridges of the Appalachian Mountains. The route crosses a wide range of scenery before reaching the lower, more open country around Detroit, making the Appalachians the natural landmark to watch for from the window. Flymap can help you follow that transition and identify what lies below the aircraft.

## Florida stretches north beneath the aircraft

The flight begins over the flat Florida peninsula. Wetlands, lakes, roads and built-up areas break up the otherwise low landscape as the aircraft travels north through the state.

_The route begins over Florida's flat peninsula and follows it north toward Jacksonville._
Farther along, Jacksonville passes close to the route. In clear conditions, the city may be recognised by its broad urban area around the St. Johns River, which forms a strong water feature through the city.

## Barrier islands mark the Atlantic coast

Near the Georgia coast, the scenery becomes more strongly shaped by water. The route reaches the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands and marshes along the Atlantic edge.

_Near Georgia's coast, the route passes the barrier islands and marshes of the Sea Islands._
Jekyll Island lies very close to the route and may stand out as a long, narrow strip of land beside the coast. Shortly afterward, the flight moves over the Atlantic for a relatively short offshore section before returning inland toward South Carolina.

## Rivers lead inland through the Carolinas

Back over land, the route crosses South Carolina and then North Carolina. The Atlantic coastal plain is still relatively low here, with forests, fields and river valleys stretching inland from the coast.

The Santee River passes almost directly beneath the route in South Carolina and may be one of the easier natural features to identify. Its winding course provides a useful marker before the terrain becomes increasingly hilly farther northwest.

## The Appalachians fill the view

The strongest landscape change begins in North Carolina as the route reaches the Appalachian Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains. Instead of the flatter coastal plain, the ground below becomes a repeating pattern of long, forested ridges and valleys.

_The Appalachian Mountains form the main landscape change, with long forested ridges replacing the flatter coastal plain._
These are ancient mountains, so their shapes are generally rounded rather than sharply alpine. From cruising altitude, the parallel ridges can form a broad textured band across the landscape. The Appalachian Mountains themselves are also one of the supplied highlights for this route and may be especially clear in good visibility.

As the route continues toward Tennessee, Cumberland Gap passes close to the flight path. The gap is a narrow pass through the Cumberland Mountains and can provide another useful reference point within the larger mountain system.

## Kentucky's plateau, valleys and winding river

North of the main Blue Ridge section, the flight crosses Tennessee and Kentucky while remaining within rugged Appalachian terrain. The Cumberland Plateau is a raised area cut by deep valleys and covered by forested hills.

_Beyond the main Appalachian ridges, the route continues across the rugged hills and valleys of the Cumberland Plateau._
The Kentucky River lies close enough to the route to be a possible window-seat landmark. In clear conditions, its pronounced bends may help it stand out against the surrounding hills and valleys.

## From Ohio's lowlands to Michigan

After the mountain country, the landscape gradually becomes lower and more open again across Ohio and the Central Lowlands. Cincinnati lies off to the side of the route and may sometimes be visible as a large hilly urban area beside the Ohio River.

The final section reaches Michigan, where the terrain is much less rugged than the Appalachians earlier in the flight.

_The final stage reaches Michigan and the flatter Central Lowlands before the approach to Detroit._
Detroit lies near the end of the route beside the Detroit River. Depending on the arrival direction and visibility, the broad urban area and river may provide useful clues that the aircraft is approaching its destination.

## Route summary

- The journey starts over the flat Florida peninsula and passes close to Jacksonville.
- Near Georgia, Jekyll Island and the Sea Islands mark a short coastal and Atlantic section.
- The Appalachian Mountains create the biggest landscape change of the flight.
- Cumberland Gap and the winding Kentucky River may provide useful landmarks through the mountain country.
