_The Houston to Los Angeles route crosses Texas plains and southwestern deserts before a short Pacific Ocean segment near LAX._

Near the end of the Houston to Los Angeles flight, the view can make a sudden shift from dry inland California to open blue water as the route briefly reaches the Pacific before turning toward LAX. That short ocean segment is the clearest visual finish to a journey that spends most of its time moving across plains, plateaus, desert basins, and mountain ranges.

## Out of Houston and across eastern Texas

Soon after departure from George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, the aircraft crosses the Houston area and the low, broad terrain of the Atlantic coastal plain. From the window, Houston may appear as a wide spread of roads, development, and waterways rather than a compact center.

_The route crosses a long span of Texas, from the Houston area toward drier western terrain._
As the flight continues west, the land gradually becomes less coastal and more open. The route passes through broad lowlands before entering the Great Plains. These regional labels cover very large areas, so the change is usually easier to notice as a shift in terrain than as a sharp boundary on the ground.

Flymap can help match those broad changes below the aircraft to the named geographic regions along the route.

## Higher ground across central and west Texas

Farther west, the route crosses the Edwards Plateau, a broad area of limestone hills and dry valleys, then reaches the Llano Estacado, a high plain with long stretches of relatively flat terrain.

Enchanted Rock lies off the route in the Texas Hill Country and may be visible in clear conditions. Its pink granite dome can stand apart from the surrounding landscape, though the exact view depends on which side of the aircraft you are sitting on and local visibility.

The landscape becomes steadily drier toward far west Texas. Guadalupe Peak is a stronger landmark near the route: it rises sharply above the Chihuahuan Desert and is the highest point in Texas.

## Into the Chihuahuan Desert

The Chihuahuan Desert marks a major change in the flight. Broad plains give way to a more broken pattern of dry basins and mountain ranges, with sparse vegetation and long, arid stretches between higher ground.

El Paso may be picked out as a large urban area set between the Franklin Mountains and the surrounding desert. The city sits on the Rio Grande near the U.S.-Mexico border, but this flight remains within the United States.

After El Paso, the route continues across New Mexico. The high desert landscape mixes plateaus, basins, and mountains rather than forming one continuous flat desert floor.

## Across Arizona and the Sonoran Desert

In Arizona, the route continues over arid country before entering the Sonoran Desert. Near the eastern part of the state, Chiricahua National Monument lies very close to the route. In clear conditions, its rugged terrain may be visible, although the individual rock formations are much harder to identify from cruising altitude.

Later, Phoenix may appear as a broad street grid spread across the desert and framed by rugged mountains. From the air, the contrast between the city and the surrounding dry terrain can make the metropolitan area easier to recognize than many smaller settlements along the route.

## California, the Salton Sea, and the approach to the coast

After Arizona, the flight enters California while still over desert terrain. One of the most useful landmarks on this part of the route is the Salton Sea, which can appear as a large blue-green body of water surrounded by dry land.

Beyond the Salton Sea, the route heads toward the Los Angeles area. The view becomes more urban as the aircraft nears the coast. Mount Lee, known for the Hollywood sign on its slope, lies near the final part of the route and can sometimes be picked out in clear conditions.

## A brief Pacific sweep before LAX

The final geographic change is the most distinct: the aircraft reaches the Pacific Ocean for a short segment before turning back toward Los Angeles International Airport. After hours of inland terrain, the coastline creates a clear edge between city and sea.

This water crossing is brief, but it gives the route a strong visual ending. Depending on the approach and your seat, you may see the ocean, the coastal urban area, or both as the aircraft lines up for arrival.
