The defining view on this flight is the change from the Pacific edge of Los Angeles to the vast Sonoran Desert. In barely more than an hour, the ground below shifts from dense city and coastline to sharp mountains, isolated water, dry basins and finally the enormous street grid of Phoenix.

## Los Angeles between city and ocean

The flight begins over one of the most built-up landscapes on the route. Los Angeles appears as a broad grid filling the basin between hills and the Pacific, making the contrast between city and open water easy to understand from above.

This coastal section is short. The route soon turns inland again, and the landscape begins changing quickly as Southern California’s mountains and dry interior come into view.

## Mountains rise before the desert

As the aircraft moves inland, San Jacinto Peak may be visible in clear conditions. Its steep mountain form stands sharply above the surrounding dry terrain and marks a dramatic transition between the coastal part of the journey and the desert ahead.

The desert continues across the state line into Arizona, so there is no obvious visual border from the window. Instead, the route remains dominated by dry terrain as it heads toward the Phoenix area.

Closer to the city, the Salt River may be visible cutting a winding path through the desert landscape. This is also where the pattern below begins to change again, with roads and development becoming steadily denser.

## Phoenix fills the desert floor

On approach, the Phoenix metropolitan area spreads across the desert in a huge street grid. Gilbert may appear almost directly below the route, followed by Mesa as the aircraft gets closer to its destination.

Phoenix itself is difficult to miss in clear conditions. Dense development covers a broad area while rugged mountains remain visible around the city, creating a final contrast between the natural desert and one of the route’s largest urban landscapes.
