The defining window-seat story on a Los Angeles to Seattle flight is the change from broad California lowlands to major western mountain systems, ending with the volcanic peaks of the Cascades. On a clear day, the route can put several famous mountains close enough to the track to become useful landmarks from the air.

## From Los Angeles to California's interior

Soon after leaving Los Angeles, the route briefly reaches the Pacific Ocean before turning inland across California. The landscape then opens into the Central Valley, a long, flat agricultural basin between mountain ranges.

This early part of the flight is a strong contrast with what comes next. From above, the Central Valley can look broad and geometric, while the higher ground ahead becomes increasingly broken by ridges and deep valleys.

## The Sierra Nevada takes over the view

Roughly half an hour after departure, the route reaches the Sierra Nevada. This is one of the clearest landscape changes on the flight: flat valley country gives way to a long belt of high granite peaks, deep valleys and alpine lakes.

In clear conditions, El Capitan may be visible near the route as part of the Yosemite landscape. Farther north, Lake Tahoe can sometimes be picked out as a large blue lake high in the mountains. These are possible window-seat sights rather than guaranteed views, because cloud, haze, seat side and the exact flight path all matter.

## Nevada and the Great Basin

After the Sierra Nevada, the route crosses a short section of Nevada and then spends a substantial part of the flight over the Great Basin. Here the pattern changes again: isolated mountain ranges alternate with dry valleys and basins.

The Great Basin is an inland drainage region, meaning many rivers and streams do not reach the ocean. From cruising altitude, its repeated ridge-and-valley pattern can make the landscape look very different from both California's Central Valley and the higher Sierra.

## Oregon brings the Cascade volcanoes into view

As the flight moves into Oregon, the route approaches the Cascade Range. This is the main visual anchor of the northern half of the journey: a chain of large volcanic peaks rising above forested and high-desert landscapes.

Several standout peaks lie near the recorded track. The Three Sisters form a distinctive group of three volcanoes. Mount Jefferson sits even closer to the route and stands out for its strong cone shape. Mount Hood is farther to the west, but in clear conditions it may still be visible as a glacier-covered peak.

Near Portland, the city may help with orientation as the route continues north. Multnomah Falls is also listed near the route, but a narrow waterfall is much harder to identify from an airliner than a major mountain, lake or city.

## Washington and Mount Rainier

North of Oregon, the route continues into Washington. The Cascades remain the dominant mountain system, and Mount Rainier becomes the most notable possible landmark before the approach to Seattle.

Mount Rainier lies farther from the recorded track than several Oregon peaks, so it should be treated as a clear-weather possibility rather than an expected sight. Its scale and heavily glaciated summit can make it easier to recognize than smaller features when visibility is good.

## Water returns near Seattle

Near the end of the flight, the landscape shifts toward the waters and urban areas around Seattle. The route reaches the Salish Sea before arrival, while Lake Washington lies very close to the final part of the track.

Lake Washington can appear as a broad blue shape surrounded by dense development. Together with the sheltered waters of the Salish Sea and the surrounding ranges, it gives the approach to Seattle a very different character from the dry basins crossed earlier.
