This flight is defined by a long westward change in scale and texture. The broad lowlands around Wisconsin and Iowa give way to the Great Plains, then the ground rises sharply into the Rocky Mountains before becoming the dry plateaus, canyons and desert basins that lead toward Las Vegas.

## Lowlands stretch west from Wisconsin

The flight begins over Wisconsin and the Central Lowlands, a broad region of plains, lakes and gently rolling ground. Soon after departure, Madison may be visible close to the route. Its city centre sits between two large lakes, giving it a distinctive shape from above in clear conditions.

The route then continues across Iowa. Des Moines lies somewhat farther from the flight path but may still be visible in good conditions as a built-up area around the Des Moines River. At this stage, the landscape remains broad and relatively flat compared with what comes later.

## The Great Plains open across Nebraska

Crossing into Nebraska, the route enters the wider Great Plains. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, and the horizon can appear much more open than in the lake-dotted landscape near departure.

Omaha may be visible near the Missouri River, with the city spreading along the water. Farther west, the Nebraska State Capitol lies very close to the route, although individual buildings can be difficult to distinguish from cruising altitude.

The route continues through the plains and briefly across Kansas before the character of the ground begins to change approaching Colorado.

## Colorado marks the end of the plains

In eastern Colorado, the high plains still dominate, but the Rocky Mountains soon begin to rise ahead. Colorado Springs lies close to the route at the foot of the mountains, creating a clear contrast between its street grid and the higher terrain immediately to the west.

The Front Range forms the first major mountain wall. This is where the Rockies rise sharply from the plains, producing one of the clearest landscape transitions on the entire flight.

## The Rocky Mountains take over the view

Once inside the Rocky Mountains, the broad horizontal patterns of the plains are replaced by steep valleys, ridges and high peaks.

Mount Antero lies very close to the route and may be visible in clear conditions as part of the surrounding high mountain terrain. At more than 14,000 feet, it is one of the prominent summits in this section of Colorado.

This mountain crossing is the strongest contrast with the first half of the flight. The route has moved from low, open Midwestern terrain into a much more rugged landscape where elevation changes dominate the view.

## High desert replaces high mountains

West of the Rockies, the route enters the Colorado Plateau. The ground remains elevated, but the scenery changes again. Instead of tightly packed mountain ranges, the plateau is shaped by broad mesas, deep canyons and dry open spaces.

The route continues through Utah and then Arizona. Lake Powell lies some distance from the flight path but may be visible in very clear conditions. Its blue water winds through canyon country in a shape very different from the more regular lakes of the Midwest.

Zion National Park is another possible sight farther west, where massive red sandstone canyons cut through the pale desert landscape.

## Desert basins lead toward Las Vegas

After Arizona, the route enters Nevada and the Great Basin. This region is made up of dry valleys separated by mountain ranges, creating a repeating pattern of pale basins and darker ridges from the air.
