## A long stretch over the Atlantic

The Atlantic is the defining part of this route. Instead of following the eastern coastline closely, this recorded path spends a substantial part of the journey offshore.

From a window seat, the scene here can become very simple: sea below and sky above, sometimes with cloud layers obscuring the surface. When visibility is clear, the coastline gradually disappearing behind the aircraft gives a useful sense of how far offshore the route travels.

## Land returns over North Carolina

Raleigh lies relatively close to the route and may be visible in clear conditions as a large green city surrounded by wooded and agricultural land. Nearby, the Neuse River may sometimes be picked out by its winding course through the landscape.

## From Virginia into the Blue Ridge

Continuing north, the terrain becomes less flat as the route reaches Virginia and the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachians are an old mountain system, so from the air they tend to appear as long, rounded and heavily forested ridges rather than sharp alpine peaks.

The route also crosses the Blue Ridge Mountains. Buena Vista lies very close to the flight path here, set in a narrow valley between mountain ridges, and may provide a useful reference point if visibility is good.

## Across the Appalachian ridges

The mountain scenery continues through West Virginia, where parallel ridges, valleys and winding waterways form a much more textured landscape than the coastal plain earlier in the flight.

Spruce Knob passes close to the route. Its broad summit sits among the surrounding West Virginia ridges and may be visible in clear conditions. ## The Allegheny Plateau and Pittsburgh's rivers

Approaching Pennsylvania, the flight reaches the Allegheny Plateau, a region of rolling uplands cut by river valleys.
