_The route runs northeast from Phoenix across desert, mountain, plains and Appalachian landscapes before reaching Newark._

This flight crosses a strong visual divide: it leaves the dry, open landscapes around Phoenix, climbs over high desert and mountain country, then spends much of the journey above broad plains before the ground becomes greener and more folded across the Appalachians. With clear skies, the window can turn the trip into a quick lesson in how the United States changes from southwest to northeast.

## Desert start: Phoenix into red rock country

Soon after departure, Phoenix can spread below as a broad street grid set inside the Sonoran Desert, with rocky hills and sparse desert vegetation around the city. This first part of the route stays over Arizona, where dry basins and higher ground create sharp changes in color and texture.

_The route begins in Arizona, crossing the dry landscape around Phoenix and the Sonoran Desert._
Farther northeast, the route reaches the Colorado Plateau, a high, dry region of mesas, canyons and broad uplands. In clear conditions, Sedona may be visible near the route, with its red rock formations standing out from the surrounding desert.

## New Mexico rises toward the Rockies

The high-desert pattern continues into New Mexico, but the terrain becomes more rugged. Shiprock may be picked out in clear conditions as an isolated rock tower rising from a much flatter surrounding landscape.

The route then reaches the Rocky Mountains and Colorado. Here the view changes quickly from plateau and basin country to higher ridges, valleys and alpine terrain. Blanca Peak lies off the route and may sometimes be visible when cloud and haze are limited.

_The route climbs into the Rocky Mountains, where rugged ridges and valleys replace the high desert._
## The mountains give way to the Great Plains

East of the Rockies, the ground opens out. The Great Plains replace steep relief with long stretches of flat or gently rolling land, and the route continues across Kansas for a substantial part of the flight. From cruising altitude, broad plains and river lines become more important visual clues than dramatic relief.

_East of the Rockies, the route opens onto the broad, flatter terrain of the Great Plains._
This is the clearest middle-of-the-country contrast on the route: the mountains recede behind the aircraft while the horizon becomes broader and less broken.

## Central lowlands and river country

Beyond Kansas, the route enters the Central Lowlands, a broad plain rather than one sharply defined local feature. It continues in sequence across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, where low-relief terrain is broken by major river valleys.

Around Missouri, St. Louis may be visible away from the direct track in clear conditions. Its position on the Mississippi River and the Gateway Arch can help identify the city from above. Farther east, the route remains mostly over flatter country through Illinois and Indiana before gradually becoming more varied in Ohio.

Flymap can help here because many of these central landscapes can look similar from the window; matching the aircraft's position to rivers, cities and regional boundaries makes the view easier to read.

## Hills return over the Allegheny Plateau

The flat middle of the route does not last all the way to the East Coast. After Ohio, the terrain rises into the Allegheny Plateau and then the Appalachian Mountains. A plateau is a broad area of higher land, and here it is cut by many valleys and river systems, giving the surface a wrinkled, forested appearance from above.

_The route becomes hillier again across the Appalachians, with forested ridges and river valleys._
Across Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and the Ohio River sit close to the route. In clear conditions, Pittsburgh may be visible by its dense network of bridges and the meeting of major rivers, while the Ohio River can appear as a wide, winding line through the surrounding land.

## New Jersey and the final approach

Near the end of the flight, the route leaves the Appalachian terrain and crosses New Jersey, where plains and rivers lead toward Newark.

_The final part of the route crosses New Jersey toward Newark and the New York Harbor area._
Very close to the end of the route, Liberty Island lies near the track. Depending on the approach, visibility and which side of the aircraft you are on, it may be possible to pick out the island and the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
