_The Seattle to Dallas-Fort Worth route crosses a long chain of western mountains before opening onto the Great Plains._

The landscape changes on a grand scale beneath this flight. Seattle's lakes and built-up shoreline quickly give way to the Cascade Range, then the route spends a long stretch over some of the most rugged mountain country in the western United States before the land suddenly opens into the Great Plains on the way to North Texas.

## Seattle rises into the Cascades

Soon after departure, Lake Washington may be easy to recognize beside the Seattle urban area. Its broad shape sits very close to the early route and provides a useful visual marker before the aircraft reaches the mountains.

The Cascade Range arrives quickly. From above, passengers may see a mix of deep valleys, forested slopes and high peaks. Mount Rainier lies farther from the route, but in clear conditions its large, heavily glaciated summit can sometimes stand out above the surrounding landscape.

_The Cascade Range brings the first major mountain crossing soon after departure from Seattle._
## The mountains drop into the Columbia Plateau

East of the Cascades, the terrain changes sharply into the Columbia Plateau. A plateau is a broad area of raised or fairly level land, and this one was formed by ancient lava flows before rivers cut deep valleys through it.

_Beyond the Cascades, the Columbia Plateau creates a broad volcanic landscape cut by deep river valleys._
Compared with the Cascades, the land can appear more open and less continuously mountainous. The route crosses a long section of this interior Washington landscape before reaching Idaho.

## Idaho brings the Rockies into view

Crossing into Idaho, mountain country takes over again. The route enters the Rocky Mountains and continues across a sequence of rugged ranges and deep valleys. The Bitterroot Range and Salmon River Mountains form part of this long western highland section.

_The Rocky Mountains dominate the middle of the route with extensive ridges, peaks and high valleys._
From cruising altitude, the Rockies can appear as a vast pattern of ridges and basins stretching toward the horizon. Individual peaks are not always easy to identify, but the scale and roughness of the landscape are unmistakable when skies are clear.

## Wyoming marks the high-country core

After a brief passage through Montana, the route continues across Wyoming. This is one of the strongest mountain sections of the flight, with high plains, basins and major ranges all visible in sequence.

_Wyoming places the aircraft over some of the route's most dramatic high mountain country._
Grand Teton lies close enough to the route to be a possible landmark in good conditions, rising sharply within the Teton Range. Farther along, Gannett Peak sits almost directly beneath the recorded track and marks another part of Wyoming's rugged high country.

These sights depend heavily on cloud cover and the side of the aircraft, so they are best treated as possible rather than guaranteed views.

## Colorado begins the transition east

The flight next crosses Colorado, where the western landscape remains tied to the Rocky Mountains but gradually approaches the high plains. Denver lies well to the side of the route, so it may be visible only under favorable conditions and viewing angles.

The more important change is in the land itself. Mountain ridges become less dominant as the aircraft approaches the broad plains east of the Rockies.

## The Great Plains open beneath the aircraft

Once the route reaches the Great Plains, the visual character changes dramatically. Jagged ridges and deep valleys give way to flat or gently rolling ground extending across a huge part of the central United States.

_East of the mountains, the landscape opens into the much flatter Great Plains._
The flight remains over this broad plain through Kansas, Oklahoma and into Texas. Fields, roads, towns and river courses often become easier to read from above because there are fewer large mountain barriers interrupting the landscape.

By the final part of the flight, urban development around Dallas-Fort Worth begins to fill the view. Dallas lies near the end of the route and may be visible in clear conditions as a large spread of streets and buildings, with its taller skyline standing out toward the city center.

Flymap can help match these large terrain changes outside the window with the mountain ranges, plateaus, plains and cities beneath the aircraft.
