The most dramatic part of this flight comes near Phoenix, where Arizona's higher plateaus and mountain country give way to the lower Sonoran Desert. Before that final change, the route crosses a huge sweep of the central United States, gradually shifting from green plains to dry high desert and exposed rock. ## Leaving St Louis across Missouri

The route begins over Missouri and the Central Lowlands, where rivers, farmland and patches of forest create a greener landscape than what comes later in the journey.

Near the start, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site lies off to the side of the route near the Mississippi. In clear conditions, the area may appear as a large green space within the wider developed landscape.

The route also briefly touches the Ozarks before continuing west into flatter country.

## Kansas opens into the Great Plains

Kansas forms one of the longest sections of the flight. Here the scenery becomes increasingly open, with large agricultural fields, straight roads and widely spaced towns stretching across the Great Plains.

The route continues through short sections of Oklahoma and Texas, but the larger visual story remains the scale of the plains. From cruising altitude, the landscape can seem almost continuous until the terrain starts becoming drier farther west.

## New Mexico changes the colour of the landscape

New Mexico brings a clear shift. Green agricultural patterns become less dominant, and the terrain turns into a mix of high desert, broad basins, plateaus and mountain ridges.

Cochiti Lake may sometimes be visible as an irregular patch of water among dry hills. Farther along, Albuquerque lies to the side of the route, forming a large high-desert city along the Rio Grande with mountains nearby.

This section also reaches the Rocky Mountains, although the route crosses only part of the wider mountain system before moving toward the Colorado Plateau.

## Sandstone and high desert on the Colorado Plateau

West of the New Mexico mountain country, the route enters the Colorado Plateau. This is a broad high-desert region where mesas, canyons and exposed rock replace much of the flatter terrain seen earlier in the flight.

El Morro National Monument lies almost directly beneath the route. In clear conditions, its sandstone bluffs may be visible within the surrounding dry landscape.

After entering Arizona, Petrified Forest National Park lies farther from the flight path but may sometimes be picked out in good visibility as part of the broad, colourful plateau terrain.

## The Mogollon Rim marks the drop toward Phoenix

One of the most useful geographic markers near the end of the flight is the Mogollon Rim. It is a long escarpment — a steep edge where higher land drops toward lower country — and it separates much of Arizona's elevated plateau landscape from the desert regions farther south.

From the air, this part of the route can show a strong contrast between forested or rugged higher ground and the increasingly dry landscape ahead. It is the visual transition that prepares you for the final approach into the Phoenix area.

## Into the Sonoran Desert and Phoenix

Near arrival, the route reaches the Sonoran Desert. Dry basins and rocky hills surround the rapidly expanding urban landscape of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The Verde River passes very close to the route and may appear as a narrow green line against the surrounding dry terrain. Soon afterward, Mesa spreads beneath the aircraft before the route reaches Phoenix itself.

Phoenix is especially easy to understand from above because its broad street grid sits directly within the desert, surrounded by rugged mountain forms. That contrast between dense city and dry landscape provides the final visual payoff of the flight.
