# How to Spot Deserts and Dunes From the Air

## 🏜 1. Start With the Overall Shape

A sand sea often shows repetition: rows of crescents, long parallel ridges, or star-like mounds spread across a basin. Crescent-shaped **barchan dunes** tend to form where sand is limited and wind usually comes from one direction. Linear and star dunes reflect different supplies of sand and more complex wind patterns.

Beyond the dunes, look for broad bare plateaus, gravel plains, pale salt flats, and river channels that are dry for much of the year. Aridity defines a desert; a golden blanket of sand is only one possible surface.

Sunlight from the side makes dune relief easiest to read. A dune commonly has a gentler windward slope and a steeper downwind **slip face**. Alternating bright and shadowed sides can create a steady rhythm across the landscape.

Sand may appear cream, red, brown, grey, or even very dark depending on its minerals, moisture, and light. Salt pans can be startlingly white, while wind-eroded rock ridges called yardangs may form long grooves.

Color alone is weak evidence. Repeated shape, consistent shadows, and the way features relate to wind and terrain are better clues.

Dune fields often stop sharply at mountains, cliffs, coastlines, or changes in surface. Wind can funnel around an obstacle, leaving a clear sand-free streak on one side and accumulation on another.

Look for old drainage networks crossing otherwise dry ground. A little vegetation may follow a river, oasis, or irrigated field, making the water supply visible by contrast. Roads sometimes disappear beneath migrating sand or bend around larger dunes.

These relationships help distinguish a living wind-shaped landscape from a simple patch of similar color.

## 🕵️ 4. Watch for Common Look-Alikes

Snow ridges can resemble pale dunes, especially through haze. Ploughed fields create regular lines, ocean waves create parallel highlights, and cloud shadows can draw false dark bands across flat ground.

Eroded bedrock can also form streamlined ridges. Unlike loose dunes, those ridges may connect to a larger rock plateau and show channels cut through them. Beaches and river bars contain sand but do not by themselves make the surrounding region a desert.

A single crescent shape is a hint. A repeated field of related shapes is much more persuasive.

Ask:

- Do forms repeat as crescents, parallel ridges, or multi-armed stars?
- Does side lighting reveal a gentle face and a steeper shadowed face?
- Does the pattern respond to cliffs, mountains, or another obstacle?
- Are there dry channels, gravel plains, salt flats, or sparse vegetation nearby?
- Could the lines instead be crops, snow, waves, cloud shadow, or solid rock?

Cabin glare can hide texture, so changing your viewing angle may help without guaranteeing an identification.
